Invisalign FAQs
Read the answers to our most frequently asked questions.
-
What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is a set of clear, custom-made aligners designed to straighten teeth without the metal wires and brackets associated with traditional braces.
Using 3D imaging technology, we’ll design a personalized treatment plan tailored just for your smile goals.
Then, a series of custom clear aligners will be made to fit your teeth perfectly at each step of your Invisalign journey.
-
How does the Invisalign process work?
Invisalign's clear plastic aligners work by applying constant, gentle pressure to your teeth to shift them little by little as your treatment progresses until they are in the desired positions. Each aligner in the series is designed so that pressure is maintained as your teeth move.
You’ll wear each aligner for a set number of days before switching to the next one in the series.
Your dentist will be able to determine how long your Invisalign treatment will take based on your individual needs.
-
How long does Invisalign treatment take?
Your dentist will determine the duration of your Invisalign treatment based on your specific needs.
Factors that may determine the duration of your treatment include the misalignment of your teeth or jaw, the shape of your bite, and the amount of movement required to correct the problem.
-
What are Invisalign aligners made of?
The Invisalign aligners are made with USP Class VI medical-grade, high molecular weight polyurethane resins. They are BPA free.
-
How often do I have to visit the dentist?
Since Invisalign aligners don't need to be adjusted – you just switch to a new set of aligners as outlined by your dentist – your dentist will schedule brief appointments with you approximately every four to six weeks as needed to check on your progress.
During these appointments, your dentist will use the opportunity to review your progress and overall oral health, address any questions you may have, and adjust your treatment as necessary.
-
What are the primary features of Invisalign?
The features of Invisalign include:
- A discreet, low profile appearance
- Smooth construction for enhanced comfort
- Do not require adjustment appointments
- Removable for eating, brushing and flossing
-
How much does Invisalign cost?
The cost of Invisalign depends on how complex your case is and how long your treatment will take. Generally, the more severe the alignment issues, the more aligners you’ll need, and that can affect the overall cost.
In many cases, Invisalign pricing is similar to what you’d pay for traditional braces.
-
How often do I have to change my Invisalign aligners?
While your dentist will determine the exact schedule that’s right for your treatment, most patients change their aligners every two weeks or so.
-
How do I clean my aligners?
To clean your aligners, a clear antibacterial soap is a simple and affordable way to keep them clear, clean, and bacteria-free.
Gently brush them to avoid scratching, and rinse off the soap.
Make sure to rinse your aligners every time you take them out, as this helps remove saliva and plaque that can lead to bad breath and tooth decay.
Before putting your aligners back in, always brush and floss your teeth. Good oral hygiene is essential for keeping your teeth healthy and preventing cavities. If you skip brushing, food and bacteria can get trapped between your teeth and the aligners, increasing your risk of dental issues and bad breath.
You can also soak your aligners as needed using denture cleaner, Retainer Brite, or Invisalign cleaning crystals to keep them fresh.
-
How do I store my aligners?
Your Invisalign aligners come with a case – that’s where you should store them anytime you take them out to keep them safe and clean. Since they’re made of plastic, be sure not to leave them in hot places, as heat can warp or damage them.
-
How will Invisalign fit my lifestyle?
Invisalign is designed to fit easily into your daily routine.
You’ll simply remove your aligners when it’s time to eat, drink, brush, or floss. That means no food restrictions, and you can keep up with your regular brushing and flossing without any hassle.
-
Are there any food or drink restrictions?
One of the great things about Invisalign is that because the aligners are removable, you can take them out when you eat! That means no extra dietary restrictions, and you can keep enjoying all your favourite foods.
To keep your aligners clear and your teeth healthy, it’s best to remove them before drinking anything other than water, as some beverages can cause staining or damage.
-
How many sets of aligners will I need?
Your dentist will determine the number of aligners you'll need at the start of your treatment based on how severe your misalignment is.
-
Can adults use Invisalign?
Yes! Anyone who has healthy teeth and gums is a potential candidate for Invisalign.
More and more adults are deciding to undergo orthodontic treatment these days, in large part because options like Invisalign have become available.
-
Can teenagers use Invisalign?
Yes! Teens can certainly be candidates for Invisalign. In fact, Invisalign has created a line of aligners to meet the unique needs of teenagers.
Invisalign Teen aligners have compliance indicators on them (small blue dots that fade away after the aligners have been worn enough) to help teens stay on track with their treatment.
They also come with eruption tabs that provide space for second molars and help prevent them from growing in crooked.
-
Can I play sports with Invisalign?
Since Invisalign aligners are removable, you can take them out while playing sports. Just keep in mind that, to stay on track with your treatment, you’ll need to wear your aligners for about 22 hours a day, so be sure to plan accordingly.
Additionally, it's also a good idea to wear a sports mouth guard while playing sports, especially if you're undergoing orthodontic treatment at the same time. As your teeth shift during treatment, they can become loose in their sockets, making them more vulnerable to injury. During this time, protecting them is important.
-
Can I play my instrument with Invisalign?
Yes! Simply remove your aligners while you practice playing your instrument, and pop them back in when you're done.
