Why a Root Canal May Be Recommended
Root canal treatment is designed to relieve pain and save a natural tooth.
By removing decay and bacteria from inside the tooth and its roots, your dentist can stop the infection from spreading and preserve the healthy part of the tooth. Without a root canal, the tooth will continue to decay and may need to be extracted.
Most people find that, once the infection or nerve irritation is taken care of, there's little to no discomfort during or after the procedure. With good oral health care, a tooth that’s had a root canal can last a lifetime.
The Root Canal Procedure
A root canal is a treatment where your dentist removes damaged or infected tissue, like nerves and blood vessels, from inside a tooth. When a tooth is badly infected, extraction is often the only other option.
During the procedure, your dentist will carefully remove the unhealthy tissue, then clean and disinfect the inside of the tooth. After that, they’ll fill the tooth with a special medicated material to prevent further infection. By the end, the tooth is usually restored with a filling or a crown to protect and strengthen it.
